This is a voluntary program for elementary and middle school students who are at risk for delinquent behaviors. Some of these risk factors include:
- Academic problems
- School attendance issues, and
- Behavior problems at home and school.
Project YES works individually with the student as well as with the entire family.
Services include intensive case management, home visiting, elementary homework club opportunities, elementary lunch programs, mentoring program, needle arts club, career awareness activities, girls club, family activities, parent school involvement, an incentive program, and intensive summer programming.
The expected outcomes of the program are to:
- Increase school attendance
- Increase academic performance
- Reduce behavior problems
- Decrease incidents of violence and disciplinary actions
2006-2007 Elementary School Program Outcomes:
During the 2006-2007 school year, Project YES served 41 elementary students. The following outcomes were observed:
- 63% improved their academic performance by the end of the 2006-2007 school year
- 95% of elementary students enrolled in Project YES were promoted to the next grade
- 70% showed an improvement in their weekly behavior by the end of the school year
- Of the 18 students who were struggling with school attendance, 67% improved their overall attendance by the end of the school year
- 100% of students enrolled were not placed outside of the home
- 50% of participating families showed an improvement in family management
2006-2007 Middle School Program Outcomes:
During the 2006-2007 school year, Project YES served 37 middle school students. The following outcomes were observed:
- 54% improved their academic performance by the end of the 2006-2007 school year
- 86% of students enrolled in Project YES were promoted to the next grade
- 54% showed an improvement in their behavior by the end of the school year
- Of the 25 students who were struggling with school attendance, 52% improved their overall attendance by the end of the school year
- 97% of students enrolled were not placed outside of the home
- 43% of participating families showed an improvement in family management
